Scarlino delivered a challenging World Championship. The wide range of conditions demanded both heavy and light wind skills. “The race course had unpredictable wind patterns, the top teams did a great job” says Chris Rast. Section 16 rounded out their 2016 Melges 20 European campaign in 9th place at this Championship. Richard Davies is very pleased with his 4 out of 7 podium finishes with his new Melges 20 team.
The overall results on the score board are relatively high, reflecting the level of difficulty of the regatta. In the last race Michael Illbruck’s Pinta, including tactician John Kostecki and Federico Michetti, not only successfully held off Pacific Yankee’s prestart attacks, but sailed through the fleet to finish 2nd and secured the World Title. Pacific Yankee sailed a fantastic regatta, but couldn’t close the deal. A big congratulation to Federico Michetti who has won his 8th World Title in 3 highly competitive Melges classes!
A big thanks to the Melges Europe, who have given us the gift of sailing in Europe in the best boats in the World.
Thank you to Quantum Italy for having an onsite sail repair loft for the entire fleet.
